Info: Website type

The first decision you need to make is whether you want a single-page or a multi-page website. Each type of website has its own advantages.

A single-page website splits it content into sections, all residing on the same webpage. A multi-page website is split into webpages, which is what it uses to organise its content.

Info: Single-page

You're on a single-page website right now!

A single-page website is comprised of only one webpage. Clicking a button in a navigation bar will move you to a section on this page. This type of website is used for telling a short story and is best for small businesses.

Single-page websites are comprised of sections, which are self-contained areas of a webpage that are dedicated to a particular topic.

Info: Multi-page

Apple's website is an example of a multi-page website!

A multi-page website is comprised of multiple webpages, each dedicated to exploring a topic in-depth. Clicking a link in a navigation bar will load a new page. This type of website is used for displaying a larger or more complicated array of information and is best for medium to large businesses.

The pages of a multi-page website usually contain a lot of information — enough to force the user to scroll down to view it all — and are sometimes organised with subheadings, depending on the content.

Info: sections

Sections are self-contained areas of a webpage that are dedicated to particular topics. They usually — but not always — begin with a heading to explain what is about to follow.

The sections on this page are as follows:

  • The 'header'
  • Our Services
  • Our Team
  • Our Process

Info: pages

Pages, or webpages, are parts of a website that are dedicated to exploring topics in-depth. They usually contain a lot of information — enough to force the user to scroll down to view it all — and are sometimes organised with subheadings, depending on the content.

You can usually distinguish between pages by looking at the URL in your address bar. For example, some of the pages on the Apple website are:

  • apple.com/au/
  • apple.com/au/mac
  • apple.com/au/ipad
  • apple.com/au/iphone
  • apple.com/au/watch

Info: Design

A design is basically the blueprint for your website in the form of a PDF document. It shows you, pixel for pixel, what your website will look like. We use graphic design software to lay out, sketch and color this blueprint.

In addition to designing your website for standard PC screens, we also do this for mobile and tablets free of charge. If you so choose, we can write the copy for your website as well.

Info: Mobile responsiveness

When a website is able to react to changes in size or shape of the browser window, it is considered responsive.

Let's say you're browsing a website on a phone or tablet and you rotate it from portrait to landscape. If the website optimises its presentation and proportions according to this new layout, it is said to be mobile responsive.

With over half of all website traffic generated from mobile devices, it is crucial that your website behaves in this manner.

Info: Build

In the design phase, we make a blueprint for your website. In the build phase, we use this blueprint to develop the website itself.

Info: Search optimisation

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of getting your website to the top of Google! We use a variety of strategies and techniques to ensure that when users search for you, they can find you.

Info: Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a service that you can use to monitor your website's traffic. You'll gain access to valuable statistics such as:

  • How many people are visting your site and when
  • Whether they are new or returning users
  • The demographics of those users
  • How users arrive at your site (from social media clicks, search engines, etc.)

This information is important to any business with an online presence as it allows you to closely monitor the performance of your site and tweak certain aspects to get the most you possibly can out of it.

Info: Host

In order for your website to be accessed on the Internet, it must first be hosted on a web server. We can upload your site and host it on our servers for the duration of your choosing.

Info: months of hosting

This is where you select your hosting period. For as long as you choose, we'll keep your site online.

If you choose 1 month, you'll pay month-to-month with no lock-in contract. Choosing one of our contract options is more cost effective in the long run!

Info: Domain name registration

A domain name is the URL that users type in to their address bar in order visit your website. It's similar to the address of a house. Our domain name is 'www.mercurywebsolutions.com.au'.

We'll purchase the domain name for you, saving you the hassle of doing it yourself!

Info: SSL certificate

A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate is used to encrypt data that is sent across the Internet so that it remains private and hidden from those with malicious intent.

If your website handles sensitive information like personal details, passwords, or financial information, it is highly recommended that you use SSL to keep it all safe. You know you're on a secure website when it's url starts with 'https' instead of the normal 'http'.
